SPAIN. Alfonso Principe de Asturias, 1907-1938. Commemorative baptism medallion of the Prince of Asturias, son of Alfonso XIII of Spain and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, dated May 18th 1907, in silver and gilt silver with letting in daylight, monogram A surmounted by the Royal Crown. Ø 79 mm. The inscriptions indicate that his godfather was Pope Pius X and his godmother H. M. Queen Marie Christine (mother of Alfonso XIII). Unique object of great historical importance. Obv. Enguerrand, comte du Suau de la Croix (1840-1914), jeweler and enameller, was famous for the creation of translucent enamel on convex letting in daylight metal, as our object. This medal comes from the inheritance of H. M. Victoria Eugenie, Queen of Spain from 1906 to 1931. As the Queen died in 1969 in Lausanne, her royal estate "Vieille Fontaine" was inventoried by Marcel Matthew. This decoration was listed in the inventory under Number 7, Argenterie section.
