Republic Li Yuan-hung Dollar ND (1912) MS64 PCGS, Wuchang mint, KM-Y320.1, L&M-44, Kann-638, Chang-CH229, WS-0089B. Type with hat. "OE" in legends, doubled obverse and reverse die variety. A thoroughly impressive survivor from the first series produced in the early days of the new Republic of China after the abdication of the Qing Emperor Pu Yi, showcasing a rather crude yet instantly recognizable bust of then vice president Li Yuan-hung with hat and military uniform. A clear outlier of this rare type and variety combination, distinguished by the presence of "OE" instead of "OF" to the reverse legend, which Kann purports to be some of the first of this series minted before the correction. Enveloping the piece is a visually captivating patina having developed from years of placement in an advanced cabinet, gently muting what would otherwise be a brilliant lustrous finish, yet still serving to highlight a champagne aura that concentrates towards the dramatically doubled legends. All-in-all, a representative that wows when viewed in hand, and with only a single specimen ranked only a half-point finer between both grading services, we anticipate a sustained and elevated level of interest for this stunner.
