China
Republic Tsao Kun Dollar ND (1923) UNC Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Tientsin mint, L&M-958, Kann-677, WS-0104. Civilian dress variety. A scarce Republican Dollar struck during the short reign of controversial leader Tsao Kun, whose notoriety relates to having bought the presidency by bribing the National Assembly, purportedly to the sum of $5,000 per affirmative vote. Kun was eventually removed from power the following year via coup, causing this fleeting issue to be incredibly sought-after in any state of preservation by type collectors of the Chinese series. Faint evidence of a prior cleaning is visible via light hairlines and an overall muted appearance to the fields, yet decidedly crisp raised devices remain and are cause for advanced bids for this covetable type.
