China
Republic Sun Yat-sen silver Specimen British Pattern "Junk" Dollar Year 18 (1929) SP63 PCGS, Hangchow mint, KM-Pn99, L&M-94, Kann-615, Shih-D3-11, Chang-CH196 (Scarce), WS-0138, Wenchao-909 (rarity 2 stars), Shi Jiagan Collection-604. Struck from British mint-made dies. A behemoth Pattern of the entire Chinese series, coveted by all advanced collectors and rarely witnessed coming to market, especially in this exceptional state of preservation. One in a series of proposed Dollars featuring a venerated Sun Yat-sen, the "Father of China," produced by the Austrian, British, American, Japanese, and Italian mints after the failure of the "Mausoleum" Dollar to be adopted for use two years prior. A general design was submitted to each mint by Chinese officials resulting in five similar designs, with slight variation in the rendering of characters, treatment of Yat-sen's bust, and wave design to the reverse; the most distinguishing feature of these British-made dies is the wave and its likeness to that of a spectral hand. Laden with die polish populating the steely expanses and tinged with pastel hues, the example at hand endures as both a conditional and aesthetic outlier, all contributing to what is sure to be substantial collector interest and thus a highlight of this sale.
