Kuang-hsü gold Fantasy 10 Dollars ND MS62 NGC, KM-X165, cf. Kann-B92 (5 Dollar size), WS-1349-9 (1/2 Dollar size, in silver), Wenchao-1196, cf. SHI-67 (Dollar size, in silver). 6.47gm. An extremely rare gold fantasy to say the least, not only as a type altogether unlisted by Kann, Wang Chun Li, and A Selection of Chinese Modern/Contemporary Counterfeits and Fantasy Coins, but also as a type missing from such prestigious assemblages of fantasy coinage as Goodman and the Chin Family Collection; even Farouk, who possessed the 5 Dollar-sized gold issue (Sotheby's February 1954, Lot 1345, later resold in Spink-Taisei Auction 14, February 1993, Lot 948), did not possess the sister 10 Dollar piece. Indeed, we have been able to locate only one other in sales records of the past 2 decades, sold in Australia in 2014 (Noble Numismatics Auction 107, lot 1984), previously ex. UBS Gold & Numismatics Auction 61 (September 2004, Lot 3176); Leu Numismatik Auction 89 (October 2003, Lot 473); Halpert Collection (Spink December 2000, Lot 252). Filled to the brink with classical imagery, the obverse and reverse taken together--the latter with its prominent longevity symbol in the center flanked by two five-clawed dragons--were likely meant to be evoked in a similar vein to the immortality greens on the coinage of Kirin Province, i.e., as an evocation of the Qing slogan "long live the Qing Dynasty." To date, this piece remains the sole example to be certified by NGC, and likely represents a rare occasion for enthusiasts of the series to obtain a high-grade representative.
