Republic Feng Kuo-chang Fantasy Dollar ND MS62 NGC, KM-X676, Kann-B55, WS-1349-18, Wenchao-1388, SHI-93. Plain edge. Imitated by Wang Xixian (Beijing). A coin executed in truly medallic proportions, the coupling of high reliefs and glassy mint luster creating a visual presence that feels very near to choice. A quick tilt under good light unleashes waves of iridescent backlight, catching hues of sky-blue, plum, and yellow-orange as it reaches the outer peripheries. Close inspection under magnification reveals few marks outside of the occasional hairline, suggesting a perhaps mildly conservative assigned grade. This is the first such example we have handled, with NGC recording only a single piece finer in their census, while PCGS indicates that they have not certified a single straight-graded piece.

The Standard Catalog of World Coins Unusual volume notes that the Peking Government authorized the Wuchang mint in Hupeh to strike silver Dollars with the portrait of President Feng Kuo-chang in 1920, though it is uncertain if any such pieces were officially produced by the mint. Numismatists since Kann's time have thus considered these issues as fantasies. From the Rulin Wei Collection
