Republic Chang Tso-lin silver Medallic 50 Cents ND (1927) MS63 PCGS, KM-X565, L&M-963, Kann-Plate 189, WS-0112, Barac-Unl. 33mm. A medal whose status as "challenging" at this conditional tier does not quite do justice to just how special an occasion the present offering affords; in the course of our research, we have come across fewer than 10 specimens that have appeared at auction in the last 20 years, with nearly all of those that were graded having received details designations from NGC or PCGS. To date, no other example at either service has even come close to this piece, NGC recording that they have awarded straight grades to just two others--at AU50 and AU55 respectively--while this specimen currently stands as the only non-details representative at PCGS. Likely produced in conjunction with Chang Tso-lin's assumption of the position of Grand Marshal of the Army and Navy of the Pei Yang Military Government in Beijing on June 18, 1927--making him Generalissimo and de facto supreme ruler of the country--the fact that this selection exists without grade modifiers is made all the more impressive, as it seems that the vast majority of these supposedly "souvenir" pieces would have originally been mounted for display or suspension on a ribbon, with many having such mounts subsequently removed. Boasting a clean overall look with silty argent color and deeply engraved motifs on Chang's uniform, and a thorough delight to see in hand.
