People's Republic gold Proof "Marco Polo" 500 Yuan (5 oz) 1993 PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC, Shenyang mint, KM81, Cheng-pg. 142, 3, CC-537. Mintage: 99. A highly coveted large-format gold commemorative, struck in celebration of Marco Polo, famed European explorer whose widely distributed writings were inarguably the first to discuss Chinese culture. Displaying a finely engraved bust and architectural motifs to the obverse, elevated by deep mirrors and pervasive frost, and only the occasional trivial mark to preclude from finer designations. These early 5 oz. gold issues are always elusive, especially when encountered so fine and with the original presentation box and COA #029.
