People's Republic brass Proof Pattern Panda "Temple of Heaven" 100 Yuan 1982 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM-Unl., Cheng-Unl., CC-Unl., PAN-pg. 7. 32mm. 12gm. By Chen Jian. An immense rarity within the famed Panda series, representing the early planning stages for what was to become one of the most popular and successful modern Chinese coins. Executed by the same artist behind such beloved issues as the 1979 Year of the Child commemoratives and the 1980 Olympic Archer coins, it has been suggested by Peter Anthony that the choice of this iconic Panda motif was the result of the lobbying of a foreign filmmaker who had produced a film about the animals and pressed Chinese Mint officials to place the Panda on the nation's coinage. Virtually identical to the final design adopted on the 1982 medallic emissions (cf. KM-XMB11), it was ultimately decided to remove the denomination from the field to the right of the Panda in an effort to copy the success of the South African Krugerrand. Notably not cited by the China Pricepedia, this is the first example we have ever had the privilege to present, and by far the finest of those certified--while NGC's census does not display data for this issue, the other two we have been able to locate graded at PR65 Ultra Cameo and PR62 Cameo, respectively. As such, quite likely as near to technical perfection as one could hope to achieve for an already incredibly fleeting issue.
