Hong Kong
British Colony. Victoria copper Proof Pattern Dollar 1865 PR58 PCGS, KM-PnA117, Prid-208. A prize among collectors of early British colonial Hong Kong issues that even Goodman was unable to acquire, and one that appears at auction once every few years and always to significant fanfare. Clearly an unadopted obverse design more akin to Victoria's iconic "Gothic" portrait, while the reverse was ultimately used for the official circulating issue the next year. Despite a designation denoting slight handling, the piece faces up virtually as struck, the meticulously crafted details fully embossed and apparent even without magnification, all embellished by cobalt-tinged, mellowed surfaces. While all certified examples top out at PR58 according to PCGS, a quick glance at others brought to market confirm the superiority of the specimen seen here, making it a prime candidate for inclusion in an advanced cabinet.
