Japan
Meiji gold 10 Yen Year 4 (1871) MS66★ NGC, Osaka mint, KM-Y12, JNDA 01-2, JC-09-2. Variety with border around sunburst crest. Virtually unsurpassed quality for this one-year Meiji gold issue, with just a pair of MS67's presently ranked finer within NGC's census. Clearly radiating with a glassy Prooflike luster that reaches every corner of the fields, even the raised features have taken on a partially frosty appearance when set against the lower-lying areas, creating a semi-cameo-like contrast that is best appreciated when viewed in hand. Only the third example we have encountered at this grade level, and the first with a star, an MS66+-graded piece achieving $15,600 in our April 2019 Central States Auction. Housed in its original red Japanese Ministry of Finance holder.
