Spanish Colony. Alfonso XIII copper Proof Pattern 2 Centavos 1894 PR62 Brown NGC, KM-Pn19, Cay-17663, Cal-121, Basso-92 (Extremely Rare). By Bartolome Maura y Montañer. A minimally available Pattern type, produced following a decree of December 15, 1893 providing for the provisional reopening of the Manila mint. Basso supposes that while the decree authorized the mintage of both copper and silver one and two Centavos pieces, no silver issues were struck, with the total population for this denomination perhaps being as low as 10 total pieces. A fine presentation, embellished by a pervasive wood-grain tone across decidedly crisp features one would expect of a Proof striking.
