The polis of Metapontion was founded by Acheans in 630-620 BC. According ancient texts, this area was occupied by indigenous peoples and during the first phase of occupation, relations were peaceful. Only, in second phase, Greeks controlled all other centres. Considering this origin, we understand because there were a lot of cults in the city and in its chora. Many of those cults are rappresented on coins, accompanied with barley-ear.
