Kaulonia was founded in the seventh cen. BC under the pressure of Kroton in order to restrict the expansionism of Lokroi. The polis started to coin in the last quarter of the next century, around 525 BC, adopting the incuse technique as the other Achaean colonies. The first incuse staters have a thin flan, as in this case, and a weight of approximately 8 g. In few years, this technique was abandoned in favor of the double relief issue, putting the the secondary symbol of stag on the reverse.
