Contorniate, Herodotus type, Rome, c. half IV - V century AD; AE (g 23,30; mm 37; h 12); HPOΔ - OTOC, draped bust r., his face characterized by a thick and long beard; on r. field, engraved monogram: PE(trus), Rv. TVRREN - IVS, charioteer standing r., holding palm-branch, dragging horse by reins . C -; Sabatier -; for the reverse type: Alföldi, Kontorniat, tavv. XVI,6 and XVIII,7.
Unpublished in the standard references, probably the only specimen known with the historian Herodotus on obverse. Untouched green patina, exceptional specimen characterized by a nicely detailed reverse. Taps on the edge, however good very fine.
