The polis of Kamarina was founded by Dascon and Menecolos in 599 BC, the year of forty-five Olympic (Tuc. VI, 5). The geographical position allowed the city to grow fast and get rich with trades. After the destruction of the city by Syracuse, between the late sixth and early fifth cent. BC, the territory was annexed to that of Gela thanks to the policy of Hippocrates, who rebuilt and repopulated it from 492 BC. After a series of ups and downs, Kamarina had the highest urban expansion during the Timoleontic period, recovery that didn't last long because it was sacked by Agathokles in 309 BC, conquered by the Mamertinoi in 258 BC and finally conquered by the Romans in 255 BC who used the area as ager publicus.
