Commissioners of Patents. DETECTING COUNTERFEIT COIN: LETTERS PATENTS, WITH ACCOMPANYING SCHEMATIC OF THE APPARATUS. London, A.D. 1875, 16th April. No. 1399. Letters patent to Charles Henry Stearn, of Liverpool. 8vo, self-covered. 5, (3) pages; Drop title with Royal Arms. London: Printed by George Edward Eyre and William Spottiswoode, 1875. Accompanied by lithographic schematic drawn on stone by Malby & Sons and printed by Eyre and Spottiswoode. 51.5 by 26 cm. Schematic with old folds. Both removed from previous binding, and with the stamps of the Franklin Institute Library. Very good or better. A quite wonderful pair of documents recording the patent issued in Great Britain for a counterfeit coin detector invented by Charles Henry Stearn. The detector registers the electrical conductivity of a coin and uses the differences in the conductivity of different metals to determine whether it is good or bad. The illustration is very well done and most interesting.
