Frossard on U.S. Copper Coins
Frossard, Ed. MONOGRAPH OF UNITED STATES CENTS AND HALF CENTS ISSUED BETWEEN THE YEARS 1793 AND 1857: TO WHICH IS ADDED A TABLE OF THE PRINCIPAL COINS, TOKENS, JETONS, MEDALETS, PATTERNS OF COINAGE AND WASHINGTON PIECES, GENERALLY CLASSIFIED UNDER THE HEAD OF COLONIAL COINS. A CONTRIBUTION TO THE NUMISMATIC HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES. Irvington: Published by the Author, 1879. Crown 4to, modern brown half leather, gilt; spine with fives raised bands, lettered in gilt. 58, (2) pages; 9 heliotype plates with tissue guards, the first four with hand-drawn ligatures in authorial red ink. Fine or nearly so. Number 276 of 300 printed, numbered and initialed by the author. A classic work, the first book-length treatise on the entire series of large cents and half cents. Frossard took the opportunity presented by his January 3, 1879 sale of the George Merritt collection to compile this work, illustrating it with coins from Merritt's collection as well as from that of Lorin G. Parmelee. The book is a good overview of both series and one of the earliest to deal with die varieties for dates past 1794. Of considerable historical importance. Davis 400. Ex William & Elizabeth Wisslead Library (John Bergman Sale 5, lot 597); ex David Sklow Sale 15, lot 58; ex Cardinal Collection Library.

Estimate: 300 USD
