Rare & Puzzling Work on Antiquities of Devon
Shortt, W.T.P. COLLECTANEA CURIOSA ANTIQUA DUNMONIA; OR, AN ESSAY ON SOME DRUIDICAL REMAINS IN DEVON, AND ALSO ON ITS NOBLE ANCIENT CAMPS AND CIRCUMVALLATIONS, INTERSPERSED WITH MANY INTERESTING NUMISMATIC MEMORANDA AND NOTICES OF LATE DISCOVERIES OF ROMAN COINS, POTTERY, AND OTHER REMAINS IN EXETER AND DEVON. Exeter: W.C. Featherstone, c. 1841. 8vo, original brown cloth, paneled in blind; spine lettered in gilt. Title printed in red and black; lithographic illustration of Shilstone Cromlech on title; 96, (8) pages; 7 lithographic plates as printed on 6, with Plates 5 and 6 devoted to coins and trademen's tokens. Binding lightly rubbed, but sound and intact. 1839-dated ownership inscription on title (see comments). Near fine. A very scarce and little-known work, with numismatic content on a hoard of Roman silver coins discovered in 1836 at Poughill, 2000 Roman coins found at Kingskerswell in March 1839, a small find of Roman coins discovered in November 1837 at Bovey Tracey, and several other hoards of both Roman and British coins. In addition, over ten pages are devoted to 17th-century tradesmen's tokens. Plate 5 primarily depicts Roman coins, while Plate 6 illustrates a selection of tokens. Harrington Manville lists this work in his 2005 Numismatic Guide to British and Irish Printed Books 1600-2004 under 1841 as "recorded, but no copy traced." There is no printed publication date, but on page 85 of the volume, we find a section on "Roman Coins Found at Exeter, 1841," suggesting that 1841 is the earliest year in which this could have been published. Which is all very fine except that the title page of this copy bears an ownership signature that is clearly dated 1839. Manville reaffirmed in his 2009 Biographical Dictionary of British and Irish Numismatics that this book was "reported but no copy traced."
